This paper investigates the pattern of crack coalescence and strength of a sandstone-like material containing two parallel inclined frictional cracks under uniaxial compression, with changing values of inclination of preexisting cracks α, bridge angle β (inclination between the inner tips of the two preexisting cracks), and the frictional coefficient μ on the surfaces of the preexisting cracks. Three main modes of crack coalescence are observed: the shear (S) mode (shear cracking between the two preexisting cracks); the mixed shear/tensile (M) mode (propagation of both wing and shear cracks within the bridge area); and the wing tensile (W) mode (coalescence of wing cracks from the tips of the preexisting cracks). The M-mode and W-mode of crack coalescence can further be divided into two and six types, respectively. Simple regime classifications of coalescence in the α–β space are proposed for different values of μ (=0.6, 0.7 and 0.9). In general, the S-mode mainly occurs when α=β or when β<β*(α, μ)=a−bα, with both a and b depending on μ; the M-mode dominates when βL>β>β*(α, μ) (where βL≈82.5°); and the W-mode is only observed when β>βL. However, more experiments are still required to refine the classification. The observed peak strength, in general, increases with μ. Our results show that the peak strength predicted by the Ashby and Hallam (1986) model basically agrees with experiments. A minimum occurs at about α=65° when the peak strength is plotted against α. For α>45°, the peak strength is essentially independent of the bridge angle β. 相似文献

Curing techniques and curing duration have crucial effects to the strength and durability of concrete. Proper curing can protect against moisture loss from fresh concrete. The objective of this experimental study is to examine the early-age behavior of high-performance concrete (HPC) under various curing methods. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the early-age shrinkage development, temperature change, and evaporation rate when different curing methods were used. Four curing techniques and two curing durations were applied to concrete deck slab and cylindrical specimens. The measured experiment data were also compared with several shrinkage prediction models. The results show that proper moisture-curing methods can effectively reduce concrete temperature due to hydration heat and limit the development of early-age shrinkage strains. The concrete of a longer curing duration would yield lower shrinkage deformation and lower evaporation rate. 相似文献

With the availability of a myriad of intelligent building components or products in the market, the decision to choose between them becomes significant and crucial in the configuration of building alternative. This results in placing the decision makers in the selection ‘dilemma’. This paper presents the development of a conceptual model for the selection of intelligent building systems which aims at assisting the decision makers to select the most appropriate combination of intelligent building components. The paper commences by reviewing the literature on intelligent building research. A survey is conducted to examine the criticality of selection attributes. Findings of this survey enrich the field of intelligent building research in at least two ways. Firstly, it widens the understanding of the factors, as well as their degree of importance, in affecting the selection of intelligent building systems and components. Air speeds induced by mechanical ventilation systems in the occupied zone are studied experimentally in seven railway stations in Hong Kong. Values of air speed at different positions are measured. From these values, air speed contours and turbulence intensities are calculated. Particulate metal concentrations in the nearshore waters of Lake Ontario have been determined to be 690 ng l−1 for Cu; 40 ng l−1 for Cd; 180 ng l−1 for Ni; 1690 ng l−1 for Zn; 2100 ng l−1 for Mn; and 700 μg l−1 for Fe. These values are considerably higher than the particulate metal concentrations in the offshore waters: 130, 8, 34, 230, 110, 260 and 9000 ng l−1 for Cu, Cd, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn and Fe respectively. In general, 50–80% of the Cu, 10–40% of the Ni, 20–60% of the Cd and >60% of the Pb in the lake water were bound to the suspended particulates. From the standing crop of the particulate metals and the estimated rates of their deposition on the lake bottom, the residence times of the particulate metals in the lake water column have been estimated to be about 0.5 yr. on the average. The suggestion is made that particulate organic matter may be an important vehicle for metal transport to the Lake Ontario sediments. 相似文献

Ninety-six urban surface dust samples collected from Guangzhou, a typical urban center in South China, were analyzed for 16 PAHs (2-6 rings). ∑ PAHs concentrations in the urban surface dust ranged from 0.84 to 12.3 μg/g with a mean of 4.80 μg/g. High molecular weight compounds (4-6 rings) contributed to 62 to 94% of ∑ PAHs mass in the surface dust samples. Four hotspots with highest ∑ PAHs were identified via kriging prediction mapping, representing the highly-urbanized regions: central downtown, highway and industrial area. Two major origins of PAHs inputs to urban surface dust were identified as vehicle emissions (51.9%) and coal combustion (26.8%). The 95% UCL of Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) due to human exposure to urban surface dust PAHs in central South China was 3.03 × 10−6 for children and 2.92 × 10−6 for adults. 相似文献

The bamboo shark Chiloscyllium plagiosum is an abundant benthic species along the shallow continental shelf of Southeast Asia. It is commonly taken by fishermen in China, India, Taiwan and Thailand for human consumption. This study measured trace metal and organochlorine concentrations in C. plagiosum collected from the southern waters of Hong Kong, China. Metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were measured in three different tissues: dorsal muscle, spleen and liver. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides in the dorsal muscle were identified and quantified using gas chromatography. Metal concentrations varied among the three different tissues, with liver having higher levels of Ag and Cd, and spleen possessing higher levels of Cu and Mn. Both Ni and Pb in all tissues were below the detection limit. Tissue concentrations of Cr, Cu, Mn and Zn generally decreased with increasing body weight whilst no significant concentration-size relationship was found for other metals. In muscle tissues, total PCBs ranged from 1.056-4.771 ng/g (wet wt.) with a median of 1.801 ng/g, while total DDTs ranged from 0.602-23.55 ng/g with a median of 1.109 ng/g, in which p,p'-DDE was the predominant metabolite. Levels of total hexachlorohexanes and cyclodienes were low. The pesticide p,p'-DDT was the only compound found to be positively correlated with body weight, indicating temporal bioaccumulation of this compound. Zn concentrations in the muscle of C. plagiosum were comparatively higher than recorded in other shark species, however, concentrations of other metals and organochlorines were relatively low. C. plagiosum feeds primarily on polychaetes, shrimps and small fishes, and thus is unlikely to contain levels of contaminants of human health concern. 相似文献
